phone consultation

Contact me for a free 30-minute phone consultation. During the call I’ll ask you to briefly describe why you’re seeking services. This is an opportunity for you to get to know me and to determine if treatment will be a good fit.

Paperwork

Before your intake appointment, I’ll send you a link to the client portal. I encourage you to take some time to carefully review the client paperwork. Write down questions that you have for us to discuss during your intake appointment.

We’ll begin by reviewing the client paperwork together and answering any questions that you have. I’ll ask you to describe your child, his/her behavior, and strategies that you’ve used in the past. Together we’ll develop several goals that you’d like to achieve during treatment. This is also the time to discuss any barriers you foresee getting in the way of you achieving your goals.

Evaluation

Over the next several sessions I’ll want to learn as much as I can about your child and your concerns. This often involves me seeing the challenging behaviors and the patterns of interaction through videos, an/or telehealth or in-person observations. By the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you some first impressions of what our work will include, if you decide to continue with therapy.

treatment plan

In the next phase, we’ll develop your treatment plan. Think of the treatment plan as the road map that we’ll be following. This is a collaborative process and requires your honest feedback. Let me know if you have questions or if any of the strategies that we’re discussing won’t work for your family.

treatment

Most clients start treatment with weekly sessions. The frequency of sessions might fade throughout treatment depending on your progress and needs. During treatment, the time spent outside of sessions is just as important as the time spent in sessions.

Sessions. We’ll usually start session by reviewing your homework. We’ll discuss what worked, what didn’t work, and what questions you have. We’ll then determine what strategies you’re going to try over the next week. We’ll probably spend time role playing. I’ll show you how to implement the strategy and then you’ll take a turn. We’ll then determine your homework for the next session.

Outside of session. This is where the hard work occurs. The success of treatment depends on your commitment to practicing the strategies when you’re home with your child. You might be asked to videotape yourself interacting with your child or to take notes on what happened to bring to your next session. This will not be easy. You’ll be asked to step outside of your comfort zone and to try new techniques. Change won’t happen overnight, however, the goal is to give you the tools you need to address your child’s challenging behavior and to improve your family’s quality of life.
